WHO || Arthur Pendragon, Wynnefalshond, Dumage Moulet, Mark Sandazhard [closed]
WHAT ||
? ? ?
WHERE || A first floor hallway
WHEN || Tues, Feb 21st, evening, right before the Chicago briefing
HOW || Actionspam or prose or whatnot.

Just because Arthur almost died in training less than a week ago is hardly any reason to slack, and Fred and company don't go any lighter on him for what happened. There might be a bit of good-natured ribbing about getting nearly killed by a girl (whenever the women weren't in earshot), particularly by the elder fighters from the Shadow World who invested less awe in the Arthurian legends in the first place, but they were all too happy to spar anytime. So by the end of each training session, even a warrior in good shape would find himself winded and in need of a break. It's not quite time for evening meal yet as Arthur descends from the second floor in the direction of the squire rooms and baths.

It's unusual to find Wynn in this section of the castle, as he tends to make himself rare in the first place, barely making appearances even in the training oriented rooms of the castle. Hearing his voice, therefore, emanating from a slightly ajar door in the stretch of rooms largely reserved for squires rings as slightly unusual. He seems to be in the middle of some parting words.

"... think you might benefit from sharing a few words with him, in time. Though for the time being, I would suggest focusing on the assignment you'll be receiving today."

An answering male voice from within asks: "But if you hear from Jack, you'll--" His voice is laced with strained anxiety, and Wynn cuts him off smoothly.

"Of course." And with that, Wynn moves out into the hallway, where he sees Arthur just a couple yards away. He pauses, hand on the door handle, looking as if he was actually so preoccupied that he was surprised to see anyone there, so much as he can evince surprise at anything.

He recovers within the span of an instant, nodding to Arthur in greeting as he steps towards him, though he angles to walk past him without really seeming inclined to stop.

Arthur seems fairly impassive, although his eyebrow quirks upwards as he gathers he's probably missing some important information to truly be able to find that joke unfunny.

"My father died," he says, blunt because he doesn't know any other way to be about it. That's a memory he retained to the nuance, of Uther in his arms, bleeding out. "I was his only son. Isn't that the way it normally works?"

A shadow crosses Mark's face at that, but he doesn't look away. He can do the math: Arthur said he'd only been King for nearly a year, which means it was less than a year ago that his Father died.

"... Usually," he admits, and his tone manages to make it clear that he feels a little chagrined for having brought the subject up that way.

"I'm sorry," he adds, brow knitting with sincere sympathy. "That can't have been easy." Could it? He had no idea what Arthur's relationship with his father actually was like, and it seemed a poor idea to rely on legends to fill in the gap.

"It was not," admits Arthur, though his shoulders are tight with tension and he's not inclined to say more than that. He still considers the whole thing a private matter, perhaps even more because he had to share his grief with the whole kingdom. "There's a lot of talk about my legend here, but I want nothing more than to be as great a king as my father was."

Mark seems to pick up on the body language at least, and cuts out that line of questioning quickly enough. Instead, he says quietly: "Sounds like a noble goal to me."

His own posture seems to be dragged down by the subject again as he speaks however, his shoulders dropping slightly, his eyes raking the floor.

"I guess not," he says, but he doesn't sound one hundred percent certain of that. For a moment, he appears to teeter on the edge of saying something else, but winds up biting it down and visibly switching tracks.

"You had to have come with some happier memories too, though."

Such a confusing young man.

"Yeah, I suppose so." Some memories just feel good without the specifics, but other are still technicolour surround sound experiences. "Winning battles, mucking around with Merlin, tournaments..." He gives Mark a little eyebrow raise, as if to hark back to the fraternizing. "Being in love."

The look on his face pulls a smile out of Mark, who asks "Guinevere?" before really seeming to think that through. Then he adds, sheepishly: "Er, I mean. Is that her--" He clears his throat. "What's her name?" /World's worst backpedaling.

"Guinevere," Arthur repeats and confirms, his eyebrow raising again, though this time he at least seems amused by it, in addition to being thoughtful. Perhaps he's just pleased to know that what was between he and Gwen was important enough to survive the ages.

Oh, good, at least he didn't screw up the time-space continuum or anything. You never know.

"Right." The smile stays in place, so there's a certain bittersweet wistfulness about it. "So what's she like?"
king: (Default)

"Beautiful." Arthur's chin lifts slightly as he summons together each scrap of memory. His eyes go distant. "Proud. Hard-working. Honest." But he cuts off his walk down the bumpy cobblestones of memory lane and looks back to Mark with a somewhat rueful smile. "The blacksmith's daughter."

That one seems to take him entirely by surprise. "She wasn't noble-born? I thought-- Didn't--" Throw out those preconceptions, Mark buddy. "Huh."
king: (♞ quite interesting)

[personal profile] king 2012-03-14 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Much to everyone's chagrin, no." Arthur pulls a little face. Everyone isn't strictly true — it didn't matter to Arthur, and Merlin had always been supportive. But just about everyone else, including Gwen herself...

A slight shake of the head. "I'd rather not keep on down that path, if you don't mind." Memory loss and unspannable distance makes the whole thing more painful than it needs to be.

"Right. Since---" He snaps his mouth shut, and nods tightly. "Right."

There's another momentary pause as he seems to mull over that, lost in his own thoughts and trying to figure out what to say next. But then, he very abruptly asks, as if it's a matter of great importance:

"How do you decide? I mean, I know you said it's been less than a year, but I imagine that's... come with plenty of experiences, for a King. But having the fate of all those people in your hands -- you have this legacy of justice, this idea that's apparently ... stuck around, I mean the Knights make that pretty obvious, at least. But even with what we do here, it seems like almost every mission comes with so much gray area over who we help, when we help, who we might hurt by trying to help. Sure, Wynn makes it all seem easy, but he's been doing this since who knows when. But he's made it clear, time and time again to m-- to us, that it shouldn't be easy. That it's a process and a journey and mistakes are all a part of it. But," his lips purse together in frustration, "how do you live with mistakes when they can impact that many people?"

Mark appears to get lost inside his own rambling as he leans forward, hands gesturing emphatically as he gets caught up in the subject. He fixes Arthur with another searching gaze, finally. "I suppose that's not a fair question, at all," he admits ruefully. "It probably all comes naturally to you."

Arthur listens carefully, and recognizes a struggle in Mark, a struggle he can feel great empathy for. His descriptions go straight to the core of what Arthur thinks it means to be king. So when Mark dismisses his own question, Arthur flicks an eyebrow up mildly.

"Do you think so?" He shakes his head. "I don't believe morality is a natural process for any person. Even the best of men have doubts."

"While I was crown prince, my father would tell me that being a king was a hard thing." Arthur shifts, clasping his hands together as he tries to think of the best way to put his thoughts. "I believe in being lead by my heart and my principles, but also struggling to... to question those decisions before I make them. And if I have weighed and taken counsel and do what I believe is righteous, then..."

He shrugs. "I'll stand by it. If it's wrong, I take the consequences. I make amends." He gives Mark a long look. "I have made terrible mistakes. And they've taught me a lot. But I don't let them stop me from making the next decision, because how would that do anyone any good?"

There's a soberness in Mark's expression as he takes this in, but when Arthur poses that question to him directly, his eyes slide away to the floor, as if bearing some weight too heavy to keep his gaze aloft to hold the King's. The inquiry seems to give him a great amount of pause, and it's obvious that he's struggling to respond, even if it's meant to be rhetorical. Finally, he takes a different tack entirely.

"You said your mistakes have taught you a lot. What would you consider the most important lesson?"

"To be true to myself," Arthur says immediately. It's still something he struggles with. "I'm the one who faces the consequences, therefore I must make the decision I feel is right, regardless of what anybody else says."

A pause. "That's not to say I don't listen to information and advice..." Because Christ knows listen to Merlin comes in at number two for hard-learned lessons. "But I spent a long time trying to please my father, my uncle, and their mistakes became my own."

Mark's eyes flick between Arthur's for a beat, before he quietly says: "... I see." And then his gaze darts to the clock on the wall, and he seems torn between relief and hesitance abruptly.

"I really don't want to cut this short - I swear - but I've got a briefing today to get to." He turns an apologetic expression to Arthur.

"But... thank you." The words seem layered with an amount of gratitude that hardly seems proportional to what Arthur offered. "Really."

Arthur stands, surprised to realize how long he's been sitting and talking. He pulls a face: "I should go wash up." But then he looks a little less disgusted, gives a nod as he turns to go, but pauses in the doorway. "You're welcome. Any time you'd like to talk..." Arthur isn't even phased by his gratitude. Obviously everybody should be seeking fantastic advice from him. "Well, you know where I live."

Obviously. Apparently Wynn thinks so anyways. And no one was surprised.

Mark gives a snort of laughter at that, even if he doesn't seem particularly prone to humor at the moment. But he nods.

"I'll keep it in mind. I'll ... see you around."
