[ The Chicago O'Hare Airport is bustling as usual when Myri arrives. They haven't often had to use completely public transportation but since she's going on her own, it'd be silly to fly privately. However, that means Amaranth is going to have to fly cooped up... ]

[She freezes at the sound of a voice.]

...How long have you all been here?

I suppose that depends on who you ask.

Me? Four, maybe five years now?

After awhile, you lose count.

And... him? [Is the creature a him? She isn't sure, but she's still got her concern focused on the injuries.]

Not sure. Eebo was here when I arrived. He might have been part of the first batch Sarandis hauled in here, when he created the Shadow villages.

[witchwoman]

Shadow villages?

Not what they're actually called, but the people who live there understand what they are.

When Sarandis took power, it wasn't very long until he put forth his series of 'economic initiatives' that had the effect of making the rich richer and the poor - particularly Shadowkind poor - able to afford nothing more than crowded flats across the bridge from the wealthier districts.

[witchwoman]

He's herding them, making it easier to keep an eye on them, to use them for... whatever it is he does down here.

Experiments, mostly. He's done his fair share to Eebo there. Injections of animal DNA, I think.

[witchwoman]

To what end? What is he hoping to accomplish? [Her eyes keep drifting back to Eebo, wishing she could help but afraid to offer it again. Her heart is basically breaking every second right now.]

He doesn't exactly make it a priority to tell us. But they say he's looking for ways to make Shadowkind creatures that are living weapons. Like the woman with the claws.

To serve him. Maybe an army.

[witchwoman]

I have to get you out of here. [She says, knowing that it's surely the most obvious thing in the world. It's not a 'we' situation. They threatened her familiar, her friends and family if she tried to escape. That would likely apply to any sort of escape she staged for any of the other captive, but Myri can't just sit around and listen to these poor people be tortured.]

[behindcloseddoors]

[ there's a grumbled, humorless bark of a laugh from the person across the way ] You think no one's ever tried to escape this place before?

Believe me. I'm one of them.

Those who get further than I did have to contend with the creatures guarding this place.

[witchwoman]

There has to be a way... Every person, building... every situation has a weak point. We just need to find it.

You really believe that? Do you know what they do to people who they catch trying to leave? [ with that she moves forward out of the shadows of her cell... and the first thing myri would notice is that she's gigantic. the second would probably be that she's covered in light brown fur and has giant fangs. an arcane lore check of 12+ might identify her as a bugbear.

the third thing would be that one of her entire arms is missing, replaced with a sickle like hook. a large scar runs down her face. ]

[Myri has no fucking clue what a bugbear is, I guess (she got a 5...). Instinct takes her back a step when the other prisoner comes into the light, bt she quickly recovers and moves back, closer to the bars.]

They'll do it anyway. [She whispers, obviously scared and only trying to make sense of what is happening around her.] They want me for something. I can't just... How can I just sit here?

Do you have friends on the outside? Does anyone know you're here?

[witchwoman]

I have friends, yes, but- They think I left for London. I left them a letter and now they've got a doppleganger out there with my face. [Panic clutches at her chest again.] And I don't know if I hope they will know the difference or not. Knowing would only put them in danger.

[behindcloseddoors]

They'd have more luck getting into this place from the outside than the other way around. Although it wouldn't be without risks, you're right about that.

[witchwoman]

If anyone could do it, it would be them. [She's got so much faith in them.]

[usurping]

[ a familiar, sinister voice echoes from down the dark hall. ] Are we having a nice chat, girls? [ he moves closer to their cells, trailing his fingers menacingly along the bars of each cage as he does so. eebo whimpers and cowers into a corner at the sound of his voice, and even the bugbear shuts up. ]

[witchwoman]

[Myri does quiet down, but doesn't cower back from the bars. She watches him warily, trying to keep the fear out of her eyes.]

Oh, don't stop on my account. By all means. Do share with me your elaborate plans for escape.

[witchwoman]

I don't understand why you're doing this. [She says quietly, not expecting an answer. But she's asked everyone else, so she might as well as him.] You know they'll never stop. Long after I'm dead they'll come for you.

[usurping]

That's what I'm hoping for, my dear. [ he leans forward, hands clasped behind his back ] In fact, I intend to extend an invitation.

[witchwoman]

[She pales a little at the implication.] What do you mean? What have you done?
